Westwood Basketball Association (WBA) is pleased to announce we are offering a series of Fall skills and drills sessions for Westwood basketball players.

When:  Sunday, September 12, 19, 26, and October 3, 2010
Where:  Westwood High School
 
Boys grades 4^th & 5^th from 9:00-10:30 am
Boys grades 6^th, 7^th & 8^th from 10:30-12:00 pm
 
Girls grades 4^th & 5^th from 12:00-1:30pm
Girls grades 6^th, 7^th & 8^th from 1:30-3:00 pm
 
These clinics will be run by the Westwood High School boys varsity coach Steve St. Martin and the Westwood High School girls varsity coach Brianne Bognanno. The cost for the 4 week clinic is $25.00 and registration is now open online.  Please click on the register online tab on the homepage.

The 4th grade boys travel team competed in the MetroWest Championship game.  Although they came out on the short end of the score, a successful season was had by all.

The 7th grade boys won the inaugural State Championship tournament held at Mass Premier Courts featuring the champions and runners-up from leagues across the state.  The boys earned an invitation to the tournament by winning the Division 2 Metrowest Championship a week earlier.

In the first round, Westwood defeated Tyngsborough, champion of the Merrimack Valley league to earn a birth into the Semi-finals against South Central Massachusetts Champion, Shrewsbury.  Playing perhaps their finest game of the season the Wolverines matched their highest scoring output with all players contributing to the total to make it to the Finals. 

 Facing Westborough in the championship game Westwood sprinted out to an 8-0 lead.  However, Westborough was able to claw back to within two points with a 3 pointer at the first quarter buzzer.  The boys in green were able to push the lead back to 8 by halftime and when they hit a buzzer beater of their own to close the third quarter the lead had ballooned to 17.  The Wolverines held on from there to capture the title by final score of 56-40. 

The State Championship capped off a terrific season for the boys who finished with an overall record of 23-2 and went undefeated in 3 tournaments.

The Westwood 8th grade girls team won the Metro basketball Championship defeating Division 2 rival Canton 52-43 on Sunday. Canton was the third team from division 2 team the Wolverines beat in the play-offs on their way to the Championship. The girls defeated Holliston 57-21 in the quarter-final round at Holliston and defeated Dedham in the semi-final game 58-43. 

Westwood struggled a bit in the early going and trailed in the first quarter. The Bulldogs of Canton were a much bigger and physical team and were tough to handle under the boards. In the end Westwood's press and shooting proved to be too much as the Wolverines turned a 5 point lead at the half to a 10 point lead by the end of the third quarter. All of the Westwood players scored in the game with the high scorers tallying 8 points. br /> A story book ending to a fun filled season that started with strong games in the Norwood tournament and trip to play at half time of the Celtics game in December. 

The division 3 Wolverines also won their Christmas tournament at Mansfield Sports Complex in December.

The Westwood 7th grade boys won the Metro basketball Championship defeating previously unbeaten Hopkinton 59-51.  The Wolverines avenged a one point loss earlier this season.

Westwood jumped out to an early double digit lead and at half-time the advantage was 11.   In the third quarter, the Hilltoppers caught fire.  They erased the deficit with some great outside shooting, making 5 consecutive jump shots in one stretch, and grabbed a one point lead at the end of the third quarter.  Westwood switched to a man to man defense and found their shooting touch, outscoring Hopkinton 17-9 in the 4th quarter. 

As the saying goes free throws win games and free throws lose games.  This was never more true as the Westwood boys went 10 for 12 down the stretch which proved to be the difference in the game.
